Aptina has won exclusive rights to supply 1.3-megapixel CMOS image sensors (CIS) for a new version of the Xbox 360 console under Microsoft’s Project Natal technology, and shipments of the new Xbox 360 are slated for the second half of 2010, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
Aptina社の1.3メガピクセルCMOSイメージセンサー(CIS)は、Xbox 360新バージョンの機能-マイクロソフトProject Natalの基幹技術として搭載されることになり独占供給権を獲得しました。台湾の業界筋によるとこの新Xbox 360は2010年の後半には出荷される見込みのようです。

The Project Natal technology uses cameras and sensors to detect users’ gestures and movements and transforms back to the console, enabling users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without using a game controller. Thus, CIS is the key component of the technology, the sources noted.
Project Natalの技術にはカメラとセンサーが使われており、ユーザーの手や身体の動きを本体へ伝えることでXbox 360を操作するもので通常の手で持つコントローラーを使用することなくゲーム操作を行えます。そのためCISは技術的に重要なコンポーネントであることも情報筋は付け加えていました。

In order to meet increasing CIS demand, Aptina plans to expand foundry capacity at its existing 8-inch wafer fab in Italy, and to look for a foundry parter, the sources said.
さらにCISの需要の増加に伴いAptina社はイタリアにある既存の8インチ半導体工場を拡張する計画で、パートナーを探しているそうです。

While most might expect the extra RAM would just be higher capacity chips on the motherboard, it’s not. The extra 512MB comes in the new sidecar. Thesidecar is the addon device for dev kits you’ve probably seen before used for dvd emulation and pix ports.
RAM容量の増加というとマザーボードに、より容量の大きなチップを搭載していると考えがちですが実際にはそうではありません。増えた512MB分は亀の子状態で付いています。亀の子は開発キットの追加デバイスで、以前DVDエミュレーションなどの際見たことがあるかもしれません。
What you can see on the pictures below is just the 512MB-addon taken from inside the new devkit sidecar and modified/wired to be connected as standalone to a dev kit without the rest of the sidecar.
以下の写真で新型開発キットの亀の子部に512MBメモリが追加されているのが分かります。改造されてケーブルが亀の子ではない部分に繋がっています。
The dev kit itself is an XNA prototype with jasper-based motherboard and because it has been modified to work with the 512MB-addon without the rest of the sidecar we’ll dub it ‘Frankie the 1GB XNA’ ;)
この開発キット自体はjasperベースのマザーボードを使ったXNAのプロトタイプです。亀の子部分がなくても512MBで動作するよう改造されているので’Frankie the 1GB XNA’と呼ぶことにします。

ただゲームを遊ぶだけの我々一般人には縁のない開発キットの話題です。増えた容量がどれだけの効果をもたらすのかすら実感として分かりかねますが、楽しみな話題ではあります。

There was plenty of confusion yesterday when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had reportedly announced the company’s plans to introduce a ‘new’ Xbox 360 in 2010. Was he simply confused? Were his comments misinterpreted?
昨日のMicrosoft社CEO Steve Ballmer氏が’新型’Xbox 360を2010年に発売するとしたプランをアナウンスしたことでゲーム業界はかなり混乱しました。あれは誤解だったのでしょうか？

So rather than continue to speculate, we went straight to the man himself to help sort out this situation.
色々推測を繰り返すより聞いた方が早いと判断し、Steve Ballmer氏に直接聞いてみました。

This afternoon, Steve Ballmer issued IGN the following statement:
今日午後IGNに対し以下のコメントを寄せてくれました:

“I confused the issue with my poorly chosen words. There is no news in my comments. Things are as reported after E3. Sorry,” said Ballmer.
Ballmer氏によると”私の語彙が貧弱だったせいで誤解を招くような形になってしまいました。あのコメントにはニュースになるような内容はありません。現状はE3のあと報告した通りです。申し訳ございません。”

That helps clarify things immensely as Microsoft stated at E3 that the Xbox 360 is not even halfway through its lifecycle, which means we should have at least another four years until we see the next “X” (and likely longer) as the Xbox 360 was released in November 2005.
これでMicrosoftがE3で述べたようにXbox 360のライフサイクルは現時点でまだ半分にも満たないことがはっきりしました。現行のXbox 360は2005年11月に発売されていますので少なくともあと4年は次世代機は出てこないことになります。。

So what exactly was Ballmer talking about? Like we reported yesterday, it’s likely a new Xbox 360 bundle which includes the Natal camera system. So no news about a brand new console, but that means we probably will see Natal in 2010.
では実際Ballmer氏は何について述べたのでしょうか。昨日報告したように、恐らくXbox 360はNatalカメラシステムを新たにバンドルしたバージョンを発売するのだと考えられます。ですからニュースとしては新型ゲーム機が登場、ではなくNatalが2010年に登場、になると考えられます。

現行Xbox 360のライフサイクルは10年に設定しているようですので次期型は2015年だと思います。まだまだ先、という印象です。
まだ公式にはNatalの発売日は公表されていませんが、期せずして来年2010年の発売を目論んでいることが明らかになってしまいました。
日本市場では苦戦しているXbox 360ですが、Natalを機に盛り返せるといいですね。
