The 40GB PS3 does fully support all PS2 games and plays them without any problems. It is just not unlocked for the retail consoles. One hint for the sooner or later release of a patch which allows full software emulation is the unlocked PS2 games support in the newest debug and factory firmwares.

これが本当だとすると、すでに噂のPS2ソフトウェアエミュレーション機能は搭載されていたという事になります。
当然現在の80GBにもあるはずです。

ソニーはソフトウェアエミュレーションには超えなければならない技術的ハードルがある、と言っておりましたが【記事】既に搭載済みとなると障害はハードの話ではなく著作権などの問題なのでしょうか。

Reports suggest a hacker by the name of ifcaro has released his version of PS3 USBAdvance that allows the booting of PS2 games on the PS3 via a HDD. Right now, his version is said to work on JAP models only but a PAL version is set to follow. Further to this, it requires the use of Swap Magic to load the elf file.
ifcaroという名のハッカーがPS3のUSBAdvanceを発表したそうです。これはPS3上でHDDからPS2のゲームを起動できるようにするものです。現時点では日本向けモデルでしか起動しませんが、PALバージョンも準備中です。ただ、elfファイルを読み込むためにはSwap Magicが必要です。

もとの情報ソースはPS3HAXです。そちらにダウンロードリンクもあります。Swap Magicの話がMAXCONSOLEに掲載されていましたのでそちらを引用しました。

最新のPS3ファームでも動作するようです。すべての日本版PS3が対応しているのかが不明ですが、Swap Magicが再び脚光を浴びることは間違いありません。
